Castle of Comfort

A curious name for a pub on top of The Mendips, but it is believed to have earned it's name for providing refreshments to prisoners travelling from Wells Jail to Gibbets Brow, where they were due to be hanged in the reign of the notorious "Hanging" Judge Jefferies.

Consider that when next you sup your pint beside one of our roaring fires in the public 'Mendip Bar' renamed because we believe the Castle of Comfort is the ideal showcase for all that's local. The finest local breweries, an excellent cider maker and superb local farm produce.

So come and soak up the atmosphere of the Castle of Comfort which is truly Mendip, enjoy the taste of home cooked meals from local farm produce and quality beers and ciders from Butcombe Brewery and Thatcher's Cider.
